Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undergoing a transformation. This is also associated with declining box office successes and problems behind the camera. Recently, rumors circulated that the original Avengers could make a comeback.
Disney and its affiliated companies
The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) seems more uncertain than ever. The times when every film automatically became a hit at the box office are gone. Blockbusters like "The Marvels" or "Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania" struggle at the box office and sometimes fail to recoup their production budget. There are also personnel problems, especially concerns about Jonathan Majors' casting as the new arch-villain Kang, as he is currently facing domestic violence allegations in court.
The end for Kang in the MCU? Marvel apparently takes drastic consequences for the next "Avengers" movies.
Even rumors recently circulated that a return to the "Avengers" roots is planned, and a comeback of the original cast is being considered for a new film. MCU mastermind Kevin Feige seems to have heard these reports, as he spoke out in an interview with Vanity Fair and made it clear that at least Robert Downey Jr. will not once again don the Iron Man suit.
A return of RDJ would ruin one of the most emotional Marvel moments
In a conversation with Vanity Fair (via The Hollywood Reporter), Kevin Feige talked about the emotional farewell of the Hollywood superstar in "Avengers: Endgame" and how a return would ruin that:
"We will keep that moment and not touch it again. We have all worked very hard for many years to reach this moment, and we would never want to magically undo it."
Of course, in the Marvel universe, nothing is impossible, and Kevin Feige has only commented on Robert Downey Jr. Reunion with some other superheroes who were supposedly retired (such as Chris Evans as Captain America) is still possible.
Especially with multiverse narratives, it becomes incredibly easy to bring seemingly deceased characters back to life. Currently, some X-Men from the 20th Century Fox comic universe are being integrated into the MCU. Find out which familiar faces you'll see in a post-credit scene of "The Marvels" in this context."
