A compelling sequel that lives up to expectations but falls short on some levels

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated sequels in the field of animated superhero films. As a huge fan of the first film, I had high expectations for this sequel. While there are undoubtedly many positive aspects to the film, I have to make a few criticisms.

On a positive note, Across the Spider-Verse is visually stunning. The style of animation stays true to its predecessor, delivering a unique and innovative aesthetic. The blend of different animation techniques and styles gives the film a lively and dynamic atmosphere that immerses viewers in the Spider-Verse. The action sequences are staged spectacularly and offer a lot of visual thrills. Each frame is filled with stunning detail that draws the eye and transports viewers into a world of superhero adventures.

The plot of the film ties in seamlessly with its predecessor and promises to continue the story. It's gratifying to see beloved characters return and meet new characters. The relationships between the various Spider-People are developed and there are some emotional moments that can pull the viewer in. What is particularly impressive is the way the film captures different dimensions and alternate realities. This opens up new narrative possibilities and creates a certain tension and curiosity about what is to come next.

However, the film also has some weaknesses. While the animation is impressive, the plot can feel a little confusing at times. There are many parallel storylines and time jumps that make it difficult to keep track of. The story moves at a rapid pace, frequently switching between characters and different realities. This causes the narrative to feel bumpy and cluttered in places. Some viewers may have difficulty following the action and understanding the characters' motivations.

Another point of criticism is the fact that the film is a sequel that builds on the first part. This makes it difficult to consider "Across the Spider-Verse" as a standalone film. A deeper understanding and prior knowledge of the first film is necessary to fully grasp the plot and characters. New viewers who haven't seen the first part may have trouble understanding the Spider-Verse and the dynamics between the various Spider-People. This limits the film's potential as a standalone work and may be off-putting for some viewers.
