In January, The Brave and the Bold, a Batman film that presents us with a completely new version of the Dark Knight, was announced. Now, we finally know who will be directing this DC blockbuster.
While we are currently witnessing the last moments of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), a completely new era of superheroes is on the horizon. The DC Universe (DCU) will replace the current DC universe starting in 2025. The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are the final three films of the old order.
Since January, we have known that the new DC Universe will have its own Batman. Ben Affleck will not be returning, and the films with Robert Pattinson take place in a completely different timeline. The Brave and the Bold will introduce us to a version of Gotham's vigilante that we have never seen in cinemas before. It draws inspiration from Grant Morrison's comic of the same name.
But who will bring the new Batman to the big screen? After several rumors in recent weeks, Variety has now revealed the director's name: Andy Muschietti will take the director's chair for The Brave and the Bold. He is well-versed in the world of DC, as he is the creative mind behind The Flash, which has been playing in theaters since Thursday and opens the door to the DC multiverse.
Muschietti is best known for two other films: It and It Chapter Two. The two-part Stephen King adaptation became a horror phenomenon like no other in the second half of the 2010s. With a box office gross of over $700 million, the first part is even the most successful horror film of all time.
Muschietti's involvement can only mean that Warner is extremely satisfied with his work on The Flash and now positions him as one of the first filmmakers shaping the DCU. Apart from Muschietti, only two directors have been confirmed so far: James Gunn for Superman: Legacy and James Mangold for Swamp Thing.
Gunn, along with producer Peter Safran, is also responsible for planning and shaping the DCU. He assumes the creative role that Kevin Feige holds in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His Superman film will be released in theaters in July 2025. The release date for The Brave and the Bold is currently unknown.
