Sorry, Chris Hemsworth, but only 21 minutes of Extraction 2 are truly worth watching!

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

Recently, Tyler Rake: Extraction 2 was released on Netflix, a two-hour film. However, you can safely skip the first 102 minutes. When I watch action movies, it's usually not about the plot for me. What's more important are impressive stunt and fight choreographies that pump adrenaline through your body while sitting on the couch. John Wick: Chapter 4 recently showed how fantastic such a genre film can be when it creatively jumps from one unexpected location to another. From the beginning, I didn't have high expectations for Tyler Rake: Extraction 2. After all, I found Sam Hargrave's first installment, Tyler Rake: Extraction, only average. That was confirmed in the second part as well. However, there are these 21 breathless minutes in the sequel that action fans absolutely must see. The plot of Tyler Rake 2 doesn't matter. It doesn't matter how many children Tyler Rake saves this time. I don't even care that Chris Hemsworth's character, despite his fame as Thor and his muscle-packed victories, doesn't have enough profile as an action hero. He conforms too much to the cliché of the laconic killer with a heart who fights his past with fists and firearms. And his adversaries are just as interchangeable. However, the first Extraction film three years ago already impressed with an impressive seemingly uninterrupted 12-minute action scene. And the sequel promised to surpass this achievement with a furious 21-minute sequence, cleverly hiding the cuts. And damn, scenes like that just draw me in. Experiencing this breathless journey in a single shot has already swept me off my feet in films like 1917 and many other uninterrupted films. But with Tyler Rake, we're not talking about an uneventful, slow scene. Instead, it's about a chase and pursuit where sparks fly. That's the best action scene in Netflix's Tyler Rake: Extraction 2. For some reason, Tyler Rake has to rescue a family from a Georgian prison. The context doesn't matter. Although the infiltration of the secure area initially goes smoothly, something naturally goes wrong in the end. And then it's all about shooting, fighting, and running for Chris Hemsworth's character. Welcome to Netflix's 21-minute jump-and-run adventure in Extraction 2. You'll find it between the 26:18 and 41:20 mark. Without any noticeable cuts, it takes us through narrow barred corridors and then out into the prison courtyard where a battle rages. It doesn't matter who the combatants are, whether inmates or guards, or whoever is after Tyler Rake and his liberated victims. What matters is that Chris Hemsworth referred to the prison scene as "the toughest thing I've ever done," and we can see it. Continuing without any apparent cuts, the perspective dramatically switches during the subsequent car chase from the driver's seat through the window to the drone's view and back. For a brief moment, I wonder how in the world they filmed it when we were just clinging to the bumper of an exploding car and suddenly find ourselves back on the backseat of the pursued vehicle. But there's no time for contemplation, and that's just as well. Just when I think that the action on Netflix is over, the characters - still without any noticeable cuts since the start of the escape - suddenly find themselves on a moving train! And Chris Hemsworth shoots at a passing helicopter that shortly thereafter disappears in an explosion! Essentially, Sam Hargrave strings together three scenes in Extraction 2 as a rapid action sequence. However, the staging as an apparent continuous shot reliably accelerates the heart rate, allowing us to simply enjoy the wild ride for what it is: pure action without deeper meaning.
